Good Standing policy

The concept of Good Standing was introduced into Ocean Reef SHS to reward students who are supportive and cooperative in the school and to encourage other students to improve their general performance.

Every student will begin the school year with Good Standing.  This entitles the students to the freedom, rights and privileges of the school.   Those students who maintain a Good Standing status will have this attainment noted on the school reference.

Students may lose their Good Standing by falling short of the performance required in regard to behaviour, work standards, dress, or attendance.  Students in this position will have a notation placed in their student files and may be refused permission to attend school functions, carnivals, the School Ball, camps, work experience or excursions until the status of Good Standing is returned.

The status of Good Standing may be withdrawn by the Deputy Principal on the advice of staff and the approval of the Principal.

ALL STUDENTS

The following rules will apply to the concept of Good Standing

Attendance

A student who is found truanting or is absent from class without a satisfactory explanation on 4 or more occasions will have Good Standing reviewed.

Behaviour

A student who is suspended will lose Good Standing.

Work Standards

A student who does not complete course work or assessments (without satisfactory explanation) on 4 or more occasions will have Good Standing reviewed.

School Dress

A student who has been referred to the Deputy Principal on more than one occasion for poor dress standards will have Good Standing reviewed.

  • Notification:     A list showing the names of students who have lost Good Standing will be relayed to staff and will be updated regularly. Staff will consult the list to determine who may not attend an extra-curricular school function.

APPEAL AGAINST LOSS OF GOOD STANDING

The aim is for all students to have Good Standing.  Students losing Good Standing are required to immediately take steps to regain Good Standing.  This may be done by:

  • a student writing an appeal to the Deputy Principal for reinstatement.
  • a student applying for reinstatement to the Good Standing Panel by meeting all the criteria set for this at the time of loss of Good Standing.

A detailed outline of the procedures for reinstatement will be given to the student when he/she loses Good Standing.

THE CRITERIA FOR REINSTATEMENT OF GOOD STANDING

The student must provide evidence that the behaviour has changed ( such as by teacher statements, period by period checks, personal conduct, examples of work) which must satisfy the Panel that there is minimal risk of recurrence.

The Panel must be satisfied that the student is committed to uphold the Charter of Rights, comply with the school rules and do nothing to discredit Ocean Reef SHS.

The Panel may:

  • grant Good Standing, or
  • ask for further evidence and set another date for review.
