Ocean Reef SHS runs Science programs for year 7, 8, 9 and 10. In addition a Specialist Marine Science program exists for years 7 to 10. More information regarding these courses is available in Specialist Programs. Science has three inter-related strands; Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Enquiry Skills.
Science Understanding is made up of four sub-strands;
• Biological Sciences is concerned with understanding living things. It includes various branches of Biology such as Ecology, Genetics, Zoology, Botany, Evolution and Human Biology.
• Chemical Sciences is concerned with understanding the composition and behaviour of materials around us.
• Earth and Spaces Sciences is concerned with the Earth's dynamic structure and its place in the cosmos.
• Physical Science is concerned with understanding the nature of forces and motion and matter and energy
Science Enquiry Skills: Science enquiry involves identifying and posing questions; planning, conduction and reflecting on investigations; processing, analysing and interpreting evidence; and communicating findings. This strand is concerned with evaluating claims, investigating ideas, solving problems, drawing valid conclusions and developing evidence based arguments. It is incorporated into all other sub-strands.
Science as a Human Endeavour: This strand highlights the development of science as a unique way of knowing and doing, and the role of science in contemporary decisions making and problem solving. In making decisions about science, ethical and social implications must be taken into account. It recognises that science advances through the contributions of many different people from different cultures and that there are many rewarding science based career paths.
